The Importance Of Goals In Dieting

By John Bito Setting goals to lose the fat is one of the single most important things you can do to lose fat or weight. If you do not take the time to set your goals I can guarantee failure. Every Sports team from Pee Wees to Pros all set goals for the season or year. If you do not know how to get there you will eventually get lost or worse quit. The setting of goals will allow you to have direction and focus for your weight loss program. If you set a goal and set short term goals that all help point to your final goal your chance of success almost become a reality. When you decide on the proper weight loss program, one with exercise and proper dieting methods you need to spend some time thinking about what you want. You have to program the computer that you call a brain. Remember garbage in equal garbage out, so take the time to think this out properly. Start by deciding on a long range goal, do you want to lose a specific amount of weight or lose fat. Figure out what you want, it could be you want to lose 50-60 pounds or more. It could be you want to fit in a suit or dress or look like someone you admire. Whatever it is make sure it is realistic and you want to do it. Make it personal, if you have emotion attached to these goals it will help you during those times that you do not feel like dieting or exercising, and they will happen. If you have emotion attached to your goals they become something stronger than just a phrase or a number. These goals are yours so make sure they are important to you and they are attainable. It does you no good to set goals that are impossible to reach and set your self up to fail. After you have chosen your primary goal start setting smaller short term goals. These short term goals are stepping stones to reaching your main goal. As you move along in losing the fat you need something to keep you focused on. You need to have short term successes that will add up to your main goal. As you attain these short term goals your long term goals become more attainable and you get motivated much quicker and stronger. You have set a long term goal of losing 10 inches of fat along your stomach. You have decided to lose a inch a month and you need to attain this in 11 months. You need to set little goals that will keep you motivated and focused. You need to set weekly and even daily goals that will keep on track to lose the fat. As you attain these daily and weekly and then monthly goals you then be able to allow yourself reward if you reach these goals. Give this step in losing fat some serious thought. I cannot stress enough how important it is to think about your goals. Start out by listing your long term goal. Something that will be at least a year away but not much farther and set a specific date that you want to attain this goal no matter what it is. Your goal should be something that is measurable and attainable. Next plan your monthly goals. These should include weight or inch loss measurements along with exercise goals that must be met. Again start with goals in the present tense and make them personal, such as I will use the treadmill 3 times a week for 20 minutes and walk 6 miles. Something to this effect and do not worry if is not some great feat. This is what you need to do to lose fat, these goals are for you and you alone. Next you want the weekly goals as to what you will do both with your food or calories and again exercise. Be specific and personal. When you start writing out your goals always make them personal and in the present. When they are personal they mean more to you. You will always work harder when it is something you want. Keep the goals in the present tense. If you allow your mind to have the time you will take it. By putting this in the present tense you create a sense of urgency. It forces the mind to focus and work at losing the fat. As with all weight loss programs and diets there will be a point in time that your goals will be attained at that time you then start changing goals to allow for a maintenance program. If you want to succeed at losing the fat you need to take the time to map out your way. Without a clear cut defined route you are bound to fail, so set the goals and lose the fat safely. What Is An Un-circulated Coin?

By Lana Hampton You may have heard the terms proof coin and un-circulated coin, but what’s the difference between these two? To understand the difference between a proof and un-circulated coin, let’s first answer the question, “What is an un-circulated coin?” Un-circulated means a coin has not had any wear, such as the wear a coin might experience when it is used in commerce. Handling a coin, as well as improperly storing a coin, can result in wear on the surface of the coin. This wear, even if very minor, will cause a coin to no longer grade un-circulated. When coins are minted they often bump into each other and receive small nicks and abrasion marks during the production process. These marks also occur as coins are transported in large canvas bags. These marks, sometimes called “bag marks”, are more noticeable on larger coins, such as half dollars and dollars. Typical “bag marks” do not keep a coin from grading un-circulated. However, they can be an indicator of how high of a grade the un-circulated coin might receive. Current accepted grading standards provide for a range of un-circulated grades, from the grade of MS-60 to MS-70. MS60 would be a lower grade (yet still) un-circulated coin with normal bag marks for that type of coin. Anything below MS-60 would not be considered un-circulated. MS70 would be the perfect “ideal” coin. Some coins are rare in grades MS65 to MS70, and even unheard of in MS70 grade. (The attribute “MS” stands for “mint state”.) A newly minted proof coin is also un-circulated, however it is the way it is made that causes a difference in appearance and qualifies it as a “proof”. To understand this, let’s look at how coins are made. Coins are produced when two dies strike a blank piece of metal with tremendous force. One die is engraved with the front (obverse) design for the coin. The other die has the back (reverse) coin design on it. A proof coin is made with a specially polished and treated die! By treating the die in a special way, the coins it produces have a different appearance. Modern technology allows the high points on the coin design to be acid treated (on the die). The background (field) design of the coin die is polished, resulting in a mirror-like look on the coin it strikes. This gives the finished coin a frosted look (frosting) on the raise parts of the design, with a mirror like finish on the background. This contrasting finish is often called “cameo”. On some older coins a cameo appearance is quite rare. The attribute “CAM”, when added to a coin’s description, means cameo appearance. “DCAM” means deep cameo, and indicates the cameo appearance is strong and easy to observe. Lana Hampton makes it easy to find the coin collecting information you want. Visit her site today for the latest coin information. Medical Conflicts-of-Interest: A Thing of the Past

By Joseph Kraft, MD Recently I had been asked to give my opinion about a new breakthrough nutritional supplement that is being aggressively marketed through network marketing programs. As a physician who tries earnestly to be objective about what I see in the mainstream press, I have come to realize that the medical community no longer adheres to the high standards that not long ago were seen as a moral high ground. Now, I am seeing my physician colleagues becoming spokespersons for multi-billion-dollar network marketing programs. Is there such thing as a conflict-of-interest anymore? This question is not rhetorical. Has our society completely embraced the idea that it is OK for a physician to prescribe a medicine or supplement that he himself is selling and getting profits from? Have we, as a society decided that there needs not be any distinction in moral conduct between a physician and any other salesman? It seems apparent to me that this is the case. One quick perusal of the medicine and healing isle at your local Barnes and Noble bookstore will demonstrate this. So why has this change taken place and what does it mean for people that are seeking the truth in medicine? The Cause of the Moral Decline in Medicine: First, 21st century physicians have to work harder and longer for less money. Due to the increasing amount of legal documentation that must accompany each patient encounter, fewer patients can be seen in any given day. I now spend approximately 2/3 of my time doing paperwork and 1/3 actually caring for patients. This has also affected the amount of time that can be spent with each patient. Also, insurance and medicare reimbursements are steadily decreasing. This, combined with skyrocketing malpractice premiums has resulted in a progressive decline in physician income over the past 20 years. I believe that this is one reason that physicians are looking at other opportunities to utilize their medical degree to make a living, and I cant blame them for that. Second, the American public has been so indoctrinated into our paternalistic medical system that they cannot conceive that a physician would actually abandon his oath to society and make recommendations to patients based on his own financial returns rather than on sound medical judgement. This blind faith has been appreciated by physicians over the centuries, but times have changed. Most physicians today are not the public servants of yesterday that would go out at all hours of the night to render aid to the sick and ailing. No, most of todays physicians are in groups and practice arrangements that are designed to limit their time commitment to their patients thus allowing them more family time. As a family man myself (married 22 years with 8 children), this has been a real struggle for me and was the main reason that I had to leave primary care to become an ER physician with no primary patients to be committed to. The oath that I took when I graduated from medical school (the oath of Geneva) clearly put my patients wellbeing ahead of my own or my family. This is a tough oath to take or to live by, but physicians over the generations have taken it. It is this dedication to patients that has created our extremely paternalistic medical environment. We tend to take whatever recommendation our physician gives as unadulterated, educated, and well thought through advice that could never be bought or sold for anything as immoral as financial gain. If you therefore accept these two facts: first, physicians are making less money by traditional practice techniques, and second, physicians are still inherently trustworthy in the public eye, then it is no wonder that todays physicians have a great opportunity to utilize this blind trust as a means to market medicine related products to a lay public. Then, as in a perfect storm, the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 enacted by congress allowed nutritional supplements to be sold to the American public without any testing for efficacy or safety. This simply means that now physicians can utilize the trust that has been bestowed upon them to promote to unsuspecting customers (formerly referred to as patients) products that have not yet been shown to be effective or safeand they are making millions doing it. So what does this mean for the average American? Please be skeptical of any advice from anybody (and now this even includes medical doctors) promoting products that they are making money from. Look at the facts and get second opinions. After all, you dont believe everything that is thrown at you by the plaid-jacketed used car salesman and now this applies to physicians as well. Before buying nutritional supplements or miracle remedies, you should always consult the opinion of your own personal physician that has your best interest in mind. Dr. Kraft is currently a practicing ER physician in College Station, Texas. He originally trained in both Adult Internal Medicine and Pediatrics and has had teaching appointments with Texas A&M and Connecticut Childrens Hospital receiving numerous teaching awards from both. He has been married for 22 years and he and his wife homeschool their 8 children, half of which were adopted from Haiti. He and his family are active in Church and Christian Ministries in Haiti. He is interested in medicine, family relationships, child safety, alternative education, entrepreneurialism, photography, medical missions, orphan ministry, nutritional supplements, and exposing misleading medical marketing scams. Knit-Finity

By Alice Seidel As summer wanes, I love to muse on all things knitting. We live in such an uproarious world; days come and go with little of anything harmonious fitting into the hours. We all need, we all crave our own special space, our own little nook, somewhere just for us. And that’s ok. Often we need to re-charge ourselves, plug into life’s energizing chords, to get ourselves going again. Think how time has changed. Where once it took weeks to traverse from one city to another, now we do it in just hours. The “calm” in our lives is always waiting in the wings; only rarely do we bring it out to sit center-stage. There is a reason baseball is such a long game; back in its heyday there was nothing more sublime than to bask in the aura of a well- played game with friends and family. If it took all afternoon, that was a good thing. Look at the old homes in your town, and most of them are favored with front porches. Lovely to look at, and the place to gather with others to recoup the days’ graces and to recount all its pleasures. Letter writing was once the art of the day. Being as important, long ago, as email is to us now, we think of writing letters as time- comsuming. But, in the days before television, radio, and cars, time needed to be filled up with worthy endeavors. Life may not have been as modern as today, but it had other resources many of which we are re-discovering in a new century. Even the Bible tells us that we should “aspire to live quietly, to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands”. Myriad gifts pass through our lives; knitting is mine. It puts me in mind of great cathedrals; they all began with the laying of one stone. So my precious creations begin with one stitch. Foundations are what we make them. Once learned, knitting is a cherished talent; one used to create for yourself, for your loved ones, your dear friends, even those you don’t know and will never meet. Never again will you look at store-bought apparel in the same way! When special occasions drift through your life, you will be ready with your own memorable masterpieces. Knitting brings inspiration; in the inimitable words of Andy Griffith it’s “just pure gala!” If you need space and time in your life to gather in your very self, then learn knitting. As the yarn passes through your fingers, you will recognize it as your own very special gift to the world. Knitting is its own distinctive prayer and meditation; crafted by you. As you go, there is so much to knit! So many people to help, and all your handiwork given with your unique mark upon it. I once read in a magazine that “to live with history is a rare thing. It’s thrilling to know how things are put together and why they survive.” All knitters instinctively know the way to peace. It is more than turning off the TV or turning down the music; it’s in picking up your knitting needles. Solace awaits; blessings abound. Go knit, so your knitting will go into knit-finity. How To Deal With The Potential Of A Woman Not Showing Up On Your Date

By Teddy Shabba There is a certain kind of women that no matter what, will always say yes to an invitation from a man. However, her having to actually show up is not part of her saying yes. It would be nice if there was an easy way for a man to screen flakes out and know before he asks her that she will say yes with no intention of showing up. Yet, the truth of the matter is most things you can do to screen these types of women out, either screen out women who were going to show up or cause women who were going to show up change their mind and not show up. In other words, when meeting and dating women, there is no way to completely avoid having women not show up. So instead of trying to figure out ways to make sure she shows up, make your dates and meetings with women at places you will be even if she doesn’t show up or if there wasn’t a date in the first place. Inviting women into your life is much more powerful than creating an event that is dependent on her showing up. Not only does this give you complete control over the situation it makes women more likely to show up. The less interested in impressing her you are the more likely she will be to want to get to know you or at least it will begin to seem that way. In the end, women who flake simply are forgotten because it didn’t cost you anything. Meanwhile women who do show up still carry the same amount if not more potential to do what you want than if you had simply created a date for them. No More Onion Tears

By Paul Hegeman Over the years I have heard of a lot of remedies for preventing tears when cutting up onions. Many of these have been quite amusing; chew on a matchstick while cutting (must be wood), others sound as though they might work; run the onion under water for a few minutes before chopping and others sound just to weird to try at all; with your swimming goggles firmly in place light the incense, place it next to your chopping board and chop away. For me the solution was discovered not by taking old wives tales as fact but simply by trial and error. You see when I was much younger and starting out working in kitchens and I would be given kilos and kilos of onions to slice, dice, julienne and chop by the head chef. With my youthful ambition I would dive in and do exactly as he had asked, standing at one chopping board for hours on end cutting nothing but onions. I quite enjoyed these sorts of menial tasks that many of my colleagues despised. They saw them as boring and un-educational. I on the other hand saw them as a challenge and an opportunity to improve my knife skills. I would weigh the onions into equal weighted groups on each occasion and time myself to see if I was getting faster. Occasionally I would get too focused on my time and Chef would walk past and compare the inconsistencies in my slices of julienne, he would say, Hegeman, slow it down! This slice is 3 times the size of this one. I want them all to look like this one, as he pointed to one of my few perfect slices. I would agree, Yes Chef and begrudgingly pick up my knife again and cut the remainder of the onions a lot slower. I digress, but what Im getting at here is that I would spend all this time working vigorously slicing, cutting and chopping onions and never give a second thought to tears. However on my days off I would often knock up a meal at home and after cutting half an onion I was balling like a 1960s teenage girl at a Beatles concert. I wondered what I was doing different and I could see nothing I was doing different at home than at work. I had peeled the onions the same, I had the same plastic chopping board I was even using the same knife as at work, (I always took my tools home with me on my days off). I couldnt think why I would cry at home but not at work. Was there a sub-conscious part of me keeping my tears at bay for fear of tearing up in front of Chef and the other guys at work? I couldnt figure it out, but I was glad I never had much more than 1-2 onions to cut at home. I later discovered it had nothing to do with what I was doing but what the kitchen itself was doing. You see at work there were 6 huge extractor fans across from me, there was also a big corridor running down to a huge receiving door behind me that was open to the fresh air. At home I had the windows in my apartment shut and the tiny overhead fan turned off. So the answer I discovered is basically ventilation. The next time youre cutting onions, simply make sure you have good circulation; air being drawn in and out of the kitchen. Try to face or be as near as possible to your exhaust fan and open some windows and doors to allow the air to flow. If you do not have any windows near your kitchen or your stove does not have an overhead fan, try taking the chopping board out side, the fresh air should have the same effect of circulation and dilute the fumes before they get to you. I have been working in commercial kitchens for many years and this simple method has kept me from shedding one onion tear. So next time you need to chop some onions, leave the swimming goggles at the pool, the matchsticks in the drawer and simply turn the fan on and open a window. Happy chopping. Are you Mrs. Johnson of Johnson & Johnson?

By Michele Winslow Cleaning your home today has been made extremely easy. Just go to your local store, buy a package of cleansing cloth products to help dust or give your furniture, mirrors or windows a high shine. The problem is where do you dispose of these all-purpose cleansing cloths? An elderly neighbor of mine was dumping hers down the toilet then could not understand why her drains were clogged. She thought only disposable diapers were not to be flushed. What happen to the day when we used old clothes to clean and dust. when dirty, we wash & reused these cloths until rags really became rags and could no longer be used? Cloth diapers were later used for dusting and cleaning, Old newspapers were use to clean windows and mirrors or rolled up, and used to help light the stove or fireplace. Hems were let down, lace or ribbon added to hide the old seam line Old clothing was also torn up and made into quilts the whole family for generations could enjoy In those days, very little went to waste. With the advent of the spray can and flora-carbons, which were later discovered to be dangerous to our atmosphere, just about everyone began to use the convenience of modern cleaning products. Today, companies claim to have products, which will Clean your windows so well that birds will not realize they are there, Laundry detergents which will get your cloths sunshine bright (what happened to the old fashioned clothesline?) with outdoor freshness Our dishes will be squeaky clean Bathrooms will be germ free And, our home will smell so fresh no one will want to leave. We had hardwood floors, with area rugs, which we took out to clean at least twice a year. We cleaned our windows every spring if not more often, and we cleaned our kitchens after every meal and bathroom every day. After World War II, we wanted everything to be more convenient, we were moving into the Space Age. Factories, which manufactured war equipment, now began to mass-produced appliances, making their price affordable for everyone. Returning service men and women used their GI Bill to buy single-family homes or went to college. Many of these men and women had grown up in the great depression of the 1930s and wanted their families to have every modern convenience to make their life easier. Women could put their food in an oven, set the temperature and timer then walk away. They no longer had to put their clothes through the ringer on the washing machine. They now had portable radios in every room in the house Television become more affordable Just about every home had a telephone We were in the latter part of the 20th Century, rapidly moving into the modern space age. Today, we have become so dependent upon modern products, especially people thirty and under, that if for some reason these products were no longer available, many would not know how to clean their house or apartment. In our youth, we think we know everything and the things our parents or grandparents tell us is out of date. We dont want to know how to do things the Old Fashioned, Prehistoric, Stone age, way. We complain today of too many chemicals in the atmosphere, yet with the advent of modern cleaning solutions, we ourselves are helping, sometimes causing, the problem. So, what happened to open windows and cleansing as you go? And, as an extra bonus you got great exercise doing these daily chores. With many of our modern conveniences, we no longer get the exercise we once did, and have we also become more wasteful? Instead of buying cloth diapers and reusing them, we purchase disposable and throw them away, We purchase paper towels, which often tear as soon as we use them, then throw them away, We dry our clothes in dryers, throw in a sheet of fabric softener, use once or twice, then throw them away Purchase sheets to put on our damp mops which, once again, we use once or twice, then throw them away We no longer go to the Green Grocer to buy our vegetables & fruit or the Meat Market to have our meats cut the way we want, the Fish Market for fresh fish or have our daily products delivered fresh to our doorsteps. Now, we buy everything in the Super market, where it is wrapped in foam, paper or plastic, which we then throw away. And, what about all those plastic containers, which may take years to break down, which we throw away? We now have invented another industry, re-cycling, to take care of this problem, but does it? At the Super/Mega market, we think we are actually choosing the products we want. But in reality, we are choosing those products, which the purchasing departments think we want. So, Mrs. Johnson, when you purchase your next cleansing product, is it one you want or one, which Big Business thinks you should have? For Big Business are really the ones who decides for you which product you will use. With their high priced commercials on every channel, radio station and/or public transportation, we have become brainwashed into buying and using their product. For, as we all know, their products will Clean your floors better Make your clothes, furniture and home smell better Your meal preparations easier Your bathroom germ free Etc, etc, etc. By purchasing all of these products, you have become a distant cousin of the Johnson family, without the benefits and amenities of the monetary benefits.
